Newman Communications
Bob Newman (doing business as Newman Communications) is a con man and a rip-off artist who preys on authors by charging them for publicity services that he does not provide. Although he frequently claims to have offices in Watertown and Boston, Massachusetts, he operates strictly from his home in Kennebunk, Maine. When authors inquire, no matter how gently, about the status of his work, he responds with vitriol and false allegations against those authors. Here are some of their stories. Success! On January 13, 2020, a Massachusetts court awarded Steven Landsburg a $5500 judgment against Bob Newman.

Steven Landsburg

I hired Bob Newman to promote my book Can You Outsmart an Economist?. After he took my money and ran, I sued him in a Massachusetts court, on the basis of his (false) representation that he had offices in Massachusetts. On January 13, 2020, I obtained a judgment against Newman for $5500.

Diane Redleaf

I hired Newman to provide a "modified full media campaign" in connection with my book They Took the Kids Last Night. He promised biweekly and extensive consultation throughout a six month campaign but insisted on full payment up front.

He did nothing until two months later, when I needed a press release --- whereupon the release he produced was nearly identical to the press release from the publisher.

It was a constant struggle to get any reports from him at all. Though he promised biweekly reports, I got only two modest reports over four and a half months, with no backup evidence to show he was actually doing work on my behalf. On the day I fired him, he claimed to have made 52 calls for me that very day. He never documented these alleged 52 calls or gave me the report. I believe this claim of 52 calls --- or indeed any calls at all --- is a complete fabrication.

My 93A letter, providing far more detail, is here.

Bernard Haisch

We hired Newman Communications to do a publicity campaign for our book Proof of God. We paid $3658 for press and radio publicity and $1600 for publicity in the San Francisco Bay area. He did some minor work ( a few radio interviews on small stations) for the $3658 and no work at all for the $1600. When we asked for our money back, he launched into a twenty minute tirade and a stream of insults. He is a very nasty person.

David Reiss

I worked with Newman for six months and received some media contacts, but then most of their staff left, the people I was working with left without notifying me, and for the last three months of my contract I paid $6000 and received 1 (one) email and nothing afterwards. When I contacted the person responsible for my account he rudely said he left because he wasn't being paid and he would sue me if I filed a complaint about. Bob Newman's phone number doesn't accept messages and when he finally returned an email demanding my $6000 back, he said he would call me and never did.

Mark Toft

I paid Bob Newman $4000 to promote my book Authenticity: Building a Brand in an Insincere Age and got nothing of substance in return. After he'd missed milestone after milestone, he claimed that he had been unable to work because I'd failed to deliver 75 copies of the book --- which in fact he'd never asked for. When challenged, he launched into a 15-minute, unhinged and insane profanity-laced tirade.

[FUN FACT: During Newman's tirade against Toft, he claimed to be hospitalized with the flu. At that same time, he was requesting a continuance in Steven Landsburg's lawsuit because needed to spend time with his son, who was about to leave the country.]
